Small areas of your pool deck may require repairs - this should be inspected to determine the root cause and determine if there is any underlying issue or systemic problem that needs to be addressed.

If there are large areas of your pool deck that are showing signs of wear and damage it may be a better option longer term to resurface the entire area - this requires several steps but typically involves:

• Surface Preparation: A thorough cleaning of the surface removing dirt, debris and any damaged concrete.

• Repair: Cracks are filled or repaired to ensure a solid substrate using specialist concrete fillers that are designed for use outdoors in high traffic and wet areas around pools.  The area is cleaned again and cut in or abraded with specialist tools and equipment to help the new surface bond with the old concrete (a smooth service will not take the new concrete so it is important this stage is done correctly)

• Resurfacing: The new layer of concrete is applied to the pool deck - depending on the finish required this can be stamped, stained concrete or scored

• Curing:  The curing process starts soon after the concrete is poured and these are based on chemical changes taking place in the concrete.  The area can take light foot traffic after 24 hours although it is necessary to leave it for 3-5 days before it can be used.

• Sealing:  Once the concrete is fully cured the concrete will require an application of a suitable sealer that will help protect the concrete from stains, UV damage and water (pools contain different chemicals and this will also help protect from these as well). We use special sealers to help reduce the surface temperature given the warm climate in South Florida.

• Expansion joints between the pool coping and the deck - this allows space for the concrete to expand and contract during the warmer/cooler weather and reduces the risk of pool decks cracking.  These can be cut into the concrete slab before or after installation.

This is certainly not a DIY job, even for an avid home improvement specialist, it is recommended to contact a qualified and skilled concrete company. What Are The Main Causes of Concrete Failure?

Concrete is a durable material and can last many years; however it can become damaged or compromised for several reasons:

• Wear and tear: Concrete surfaces can become cracked or chipped through general use and repeated use over time. In addition, water can seep through concrete and cause issues during freeze-thaw cycles. However, the climate in South Florida is warm and tropical, so this is less likely to be an issue.

• Water ingress: Water penetrating the concrete slab can cause steel mesh to rust or erosion of the soil and aggregate underneath - this can weaken the concrete above and make it more susceptible to damage. Less frequently, water can react with certain alkalis present in the aggregates, which can cause the cement in the concrete to crack - this is called spalling.

• Ground conditions: Concrete slabs sit on compacted aggregate (a mixture of sand, stones, and soil) - if there is subsidence or shifts in the ground beneath the concrete, it can cause issues that can lead to cracks or depressions appearing on the surface and weakening of the concrete.

• Extreme Weather: Storms, floods, and other natural events can cause damage to concrete surfaces (including falling debris such as trees or other large, heavy objects). This would require repairs should the structure of the concrete be compromised.

• Incorrect Installation: Although concrete is very strong and durable, if not installed to the correct specifications, this can cause premature wear and damage to the concrete; this is why it is important to work with a qualified contractor.

• Lack of maintenance: Generally, concrete requires little maintenance; however it is important to wash down concrete surfaces and ensure the area is kept free from weeds or tree roots that can spread under the slab and cause issues over time.
